A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder (cystitis) and the urethra (urethritis). UTIs are more common in women, but they can affect men as well. Causes UTIs typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder. Common causes include: Bacterial entry: The most common bacterium causing UTIs is Escherichia coli (E. coli), found in the gastrointestinal tract. Other bacteria: Other less common bacteria include Klebsiella, Proteus, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Risk factors: Sexual activity, certain types of birth control (e.g., diaphragms), menopause, urinary catheters, and urinary tract abnormalities.
